Greetings from the Chicago World's Fair of 1893! Our diary writer, Mr. Motoda, is taking a holiday from seminary in Philadelphia to visit the "World's Columbian Exposition". In his words: "All the exhibits are simply grand, no pen can tell its full significance."
Diaries. My favorite type of document to transcribe because it gives me the chance to immerse myself in another time and place for more than just a single day. Journals give us an inside look at another person. I feel that I get to know them by reading of their daily struggles or triumphs; how they viewed the people around them; what they found humorous or tedious or fascinating.
A shout-out of congratulations to local Onancock authors Karen Gravelle and Eliza McBride for their recent publication! I highly recommend this work for local history buffs, or anyone interested in architecture and cultural changes in small communities. It was a great privilege to help out in a small way with some of the research for this book about old bank buildings on the Eastern Shore.
Spring is here on the Eastern Shore, and that means more time spent wandering back roads and hidden trails to soak in the beauty of God's creation bursting with new life.
Nostalgia... Have you ever seen someone's handwriting that reminds you of a loved one? Or perhaps run across a scrap of writing penned by someone no longer with you? The connection to memories brought by familiar handwriting can be as strong as a scent memory sometimes. Don't you think?
Though I've been away from this space for a good while, the work of transcribing goes on quietly in the background.
